Genre Three - R&B:
The third genre that I have researched is R&B. I decided to research this genre as lots of very famous artists are part of this music. Also, R&B is a genre that I enjoy to listen to most days. I personally listen to many international mass audience R&B artists, for example Rihanna, Beyoncé, The weekend and Chris Brown. All of these artists are internationally selling R&B artists who each have there unique style but all have an aspect of R&B in there sound. R&B has only in the past couple of years become increasingly popular taking over the pop genre that has previously dominated the charts.
Music Videos - R&B music videos are usually very fast paced, mostly always showing people at parties and individuals being strong to suggest the fast pace of the R&B genre. Also, stereotypically most R&B artists wear sun glasses as it makes them look powerful and stand out. I have noticed that if it is a slower song the lighting is more natural and there is normally kissing that happens as it is more romantic sounding. The music videos for this genre of music is normally very out there and this makes people look at the video and then from this like the song. I know this personally that I will start to like a song after seeing the music video making the music video a very significant part in the selling of a song and getting a reaction from the public. The music videos are normally a very important factor in how well a song does altogether with its sales. YouTube is a main streaming service that many people use to watch music videos as well as Vevo. Some people may argue that an artists music video helps mainly the artists to share their videos to get as many people as they can to watch it. Also, music videos of this genre are shown frequently on 4Music which is a key selling point for the artists. 4Music is one of the UK's biggest music video channel where it shows music videos all day.
One important factor about R&B music videos that I noticed a lot when researching it was that in R&B music videos the males are normally always topless, wearing jeans, have tattoos and wearing chains. This has become very stereotypical of an R&B music video and people expect this and tell the difference easily between the different genres of music. Also, I noticed that females are normally always wearing little clothing (making them provocative) makeup, heels and jewellery making this stereotypical in this particular genre of music as it is re accruing for mostly every R&B music videos.
An example of a music video that goes against the stereotype of the R&B genre is Like a Boy by Ciara. This goes against the stereotype of R&B videos as it is a girl acting like a boy to show that the stereotypes are not good and can be hurtful to women. Also, this targets a certain audience who will enjoy this going against the stereotype and showing that men and women can be equal even in music and women are powerful.
R&B is a genre that I have really enjoyed researching and will definitely look into further when creating my own music video.
