Chosen Target Audience Collage

Target Audience:

The target audience is a very important factor when it comes to making our music video as the target audience is the specific people that you make the music video for that will buy and listen to the music genre. This is important to get a specific age range as different ages have different interests in what they want to see in a music video. As well as this different genders also have different opinions in what they want to see in a music video, something a male  would see as interesting a female would think otherwise. For example, men might prefer to see a deeper storyline whereas women want to see something light hearted.

Our chosen genre that we are interested to look at doing a song from is R&B so I have decided to do some research into what the target audience is for this particular genre.

R&B audiences are usually appeals to teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14and 25. This is because of the explicit lyrics that are used in mainly all R&B songs that are appealing to this particular age range more. It is mainly appealable to both men and women as different artists have a slightly different style that will appeal to both. However, some of the slower songs are stereotypically targeted at females as the song will be about love and heartbreak of which females can relate to. R&B songs that are slightly faster appeals to both male and female as it involves fashion within the theme of the song. For example, BeyoncĂ© who is an example of an artist who shows a powerful women through what she wears and the lyrics she uses. "all the single ladies, put your hands up" creating a positive aspect on being single that people don't normally relate to being good.

Male R&B artists usually target a female audience as the male artists are nearly always portrayed as a sexy or in a sexual way through their lyrics and choice of clothing. However, male audience will be attracted to the jewellery, cars and cash.

An example of a famous artist who appeals to mainly females between the age of 14 and 25 is Nicki Minaj. Due to her over sexualised dancing this specific target audience is appropriate. Also she wears skimpy clothes which arguable could be to impress men:

Nicki Minaj - Superbass

Nicki Minaj's UK hit 'Superbass' was released in April 2011 by Cash Money Records and reached the top forty music chart. The song is aimed at people who like R&B, Pop and Rap creating a wide spread audience who will buy, listen and download the song making money for the artist herself, her label and the music industry.
The songs target audience is young female adults and teenage girls. Nicki Minaj says she writes, sings and raps these songs for young girls and independent women out there as no one else in the music business is relating to issues of this age range and gender at the moment. Nicki Minaj shows and wants women/girls out there to love and respect themselves, she also states that women can be apart of the music business and even the rap world as women are discriminated within Rap, Nicki Minaj has shown women they can accomplish this career in life without being stereotyped.
This song is clearly aimed at young female adults and teens as the colouring of the music video specifically uses the colour pink throughout. This colour is used and many other bright colours because they are represented as girly colours to relate back to the target audience.

Nicki Minaj appeals to people of a younger target audience mainly. I have realised that by the choice of many different factors of the music video can contribute to what the target audience is. Also, the genre of the music has a huge influence in what the target audience is.

I have spoken to Alicia and we have decided that for the song that we are looking at doing (Black eyed peas - Where is the Love) the target audience would be both males and females between the ages of 13 - 35 as it gives a message to different ages of people of all different ethnicities and races about the world.
