Record Labels: A record label is a publishing company that manages brands and trademarks, coordinates the production, manufacture, distribution, marketing, promotion, and enforcement of copyright for sound recordings and music videos; conducts talent scouting and development of artists.
Major Labels since 2012 (Big Three):
2. Sony Music
3. Warner Music Group
Universal Music Group - Universal Music Group (also known in the US as UMG Recordings) is an American global music corporation. It is considered one of the "Big Three" record labels, along with Sony Music and Warner Music Group. Mainstream artists such as Nicki Minaj and Enrique Iglesias are signed to the record label and both have huge international success.
The universal logo is very effective as the logo picture that they use is the same for everything that they have. As well as the music record label, Universal as has film distribution using this logo meaning that the brand universal becomes more recognisable from a mass audience. The logo is very plain and simple which stands out by itself which I think looks very effective.
Sony Music - Sony Music Entertainment (known professionally as Sony Music) is an American music company owned by Sony that is incorporated as a general partnership of Sony Music Holdings Inc. through Sony Entertainment. The company was first founded in 1929 as American Record Corporation and was renamed Columbia Recording Corporation in 1938. In 1966, the company was reorganised to become CBS Records. Sony Corporation bought the company in 1987 and renamed it Sony Music Entertainment in 1991. The mainstream record label is one of the biggest record labels in the world and has signed many successful artists such as Beyoncé, Shakira, The Chainsmokers and Britney Spears.
This logo is again quite plain and simple but effective as the colour red will represent Sony music and people will remember this whenever they see it they will remember it.
Warner Music Group - Warner Music Group is an American multinational entertainment and record label conglomerate headquartered in New York City. It is one of the "big three" recording companies and the third largest in the global music industry, next to Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Formerly owned by Time Warner, the company was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange until May 2011, when it announced its privatisation and sale to Access Industries. With a multibillion-dollar annual turnover, Warner Music Group employs in excess of 3,500 people and has appeals to audiences in over 50 countries throughout the world.
The company owns and operates some of the largest and most successful record labels in the world, including its flagship labels Warner Bros. Records, Parlophone and Atlantic Records.
This logo is very simple but effective also as it stands out against other record label logos as it has colour on it and stands out against all of the other plain record label logos.
My Own Record Label Logo Design:
I am in a group with Alicia and we have looked at different record label logos, to look at what features they each have in common and how they differ. We realised very quickly that they're all very simple as the fonts are very plain and the pictures are very plain with not much design. Furthermore, the colours that are used are mainly black and white which doesn't make them stand out alone. However, we soon realised that conglomerate record label companies, such as universal use the same logo each time that their product is used. Meaning, people could recognise the logo and know that the product is from this certain record label.
