Genre Two - Indie Rock

Genre Two - Indie Rock:

The second genre that I looked at was Indie Rock as it is a very popular genre at the moment, with new artists and bands coming up all the time.

Indie Rock - is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the US and the UK  in the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, some indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.
In the mid-1980s, the term Indie Rock began to be used to describe the music produced on punk and post-punk labels. Some prominent indie rock record labels were founded during the 1980s. By the end of the 1990s indie rock developed subgenres and related styles including lo-fi, noise pop, emo, slow core, post-rock and math rock. In the 2000s, changes in the music industry and in music technology enabled a new wave of indie rock bands to achieve mainstream success.
In the early 2000s, a new group of bands that played a stripped-down and back-to-basics version of guitar rock emerged into the mainstream. The commercial breakthrough from these scenes was led by four bands: The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives and The Vines.

Music Videos - In typical Indie Rock music videos the whole video is normally of a live music concert that they have done that has been filmed. This is because the artists normally have a niche audience so by involving the fans into the music video it shows the passion that they have for their fans and that they appreciate what they do for them. A key example of a rock indie band that does this is "30 Seconds to Mars".

As well as this many rock indie bands use narrative in their music video to connect the fans also to what they're saying. Whether it be a story or to show the passion that they have for their fans. This makes the target audience that bands have in this genre be niche but they're very connected to the fans that they do have.  Bands in this genre with a niche audience mainly use social media to promote their songs as this is the main part of the distribution of the music. They rely heavily on world of mouth through people on social media to make sure that the albums and songs are shared. Bands rely on social media to promote their albums as they're part of an independent record label meaning the company doesn't distribute the albums as much it is down to the artists to promote their own music.

Mise en scene - narrative and performance is used in most of the music videos to create a vast difference in what each video does to make it original which appeals to their particular target audience with it normally being a niche audience. Bands usually stereotypically wear rock star clothes in the music videos that they would wear at a concert. Their hair is usually coloured and in a punk rock way to relate back to the genre that they're part of. The lighting in the music video is usually light as the light in a concert is normally bright to make the audience engage into the concert. The lighting is also into the audience to make the audience feel like they're part of the concert with the band.

Indie rock is a sub genre and appeals to mainly independent labels as the audience is mainly niche, national audiences in the one country that that particular band or artist is  from.

Indie Rock is a fairly new genre of music with only very recent success with normally a very niche and national audience. I like that the indie rock genre is very individual and this is what makes me interested in this sort of music.

Research into music video genres

Pop, R&B and Rap Genre:

The genres that I am interested in is Pop, Rock, and Rap and so I  have decided to research these different genres as well as artists/groups that I like in these particular genres.

Unforgettable - French Montana:

French Montana - Karim Kharbouch (born November the 9th, 1984) better known by his stage name French Montana, is a Moroccan American Hip Hop recording artist.

Unforgettable -  It was released through Epic Records and Bad Boy Records on April the 7th, 2017. It's peak position in the UK charts was number 5 and 9 in the US charts. The music video for this song was premiered on April the 13th, 2017 on Vevo and YouTube. The video was shot in Kampala, Uganda which was directed by French Montana himself and Spiff TV and includes Uganadan young dance group. The music video has over 82 million views on YouTube making it one of the most popular as it trended for 2 weeks.

What I like about this music video is that it is very well thought out and is very different to the norm of a music video making it original. It also, adds a different interpretation of what the song is about with the dancers of the poor area in Africa. This genre hip hop is very different to what I would normally listen to but I enjoy the song as it I upbeat and catchy.

Little Mix - Shout out to my Ex:

Little Mix - Little mix are a British girl group formed in 2011 during the eighth series of the UK XFactor. They are so far the only group to win the competition. They were signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Music and released as there first single "Cannnonball". The members are Jade, Perrie, Leigh - Anne and Jesy. Their first single "wings" was in the top 10 in the UK and the US and made them the first group to reach the top 5 since the spice girls. They have had four, number 1 songs in the UK (Wings, Salute, Black Magic and Shout out to My Ex). The group won best British single at the 2017 Brit Awards and have has 2 MTV Europe Music awards, two Teen Choice Awards and two Glamour Awards. They have achieved four platinum certified albums and eleven certified singles in the UK. They also hold the record for the most VEVO certified videos for a British female artist, pushing Adele to Second place.

Shout out to my EX -  The song was number 1 in the UK for a couple of weeks, after them performing on the XFactor live shows.  The music video was set in the Tabernas desert in Almeria, Spain and was released on October the 21st 2016 on VEVO. I like this music video as it is very fun and high paced with a lot of different shots in different locations to make it high energy.

I like the genre of this song Pop as it is really upbeat and catchy of which I enjoy to listen to as it is inspiring and happy. Also, I like this song because they have variety of different shots that they have used which I would like to use when it comes to making my music video.

1975 - The Sound

The 1975 -  are an English rock band originating from Manchester. The group consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Matthew Healy, lead guitarist Adam Hann, bass Ross MacDonald, and drummer George Daniel.

The group are shown dressed in black and playing in a large glass cube in a dark room throughout. This music video makes the audience feel connected as they're telling a story that they want the audience to understand the meaning behind the song.

I like this song as it is very different to the norm song that is in the charts and the original type of music is very original. They play as a band which is very good live of which I like also. I also like that the story that runs throughout the music video is something that I want to do as it engages the audience and I want them to feel engaged and remember the story of the music video.

Macklemore - Benjamin Hammond Haggerty (born June 19, 1983), known by his stage name Macklemore is an American hip hop recording artist from Kent, Washington. Selena Gomez - Kill Em With Kindness:

Selena Gomez - Elena Marie Gomez (born July 22, 1992) is an American actress and singer. She signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records in 2008 and subsequently formed her band Selena Gomez & the Scene the following year. Kill em with Kindness - It is the fourth and final single from her second studio album Revival (2015). Gomez and Dave Audé wrote the song with its producers Rock Mafia and Benny Blanco.  It was inspired by the fat-shaming Gomez endured from news outlets and social media users after pictures of the singer on a beach in Mexico surfaced online. "Kill Em with Kindness" garnered generally positive reviews from music critics, who highlighted its positive themes, sleek production, and hook, although some felt it lacked originality. In the United Stakes, it peaked at number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.The accompanying music video was directed by Emil Nava and released on June 6, 2016. The black and white clip follows the singer around a sprawling mansion during multiple photo shoots, dressed only in a corset and underwear.

I like this song as it has an inspiring message behind it of showing the haters and critics that they can't bring you down. I also like this music video as the lyrics take over the music video and it adds to the story of what is happening which makes it really emotional and thought provoking.

I like this music video as again the lyrics and the music video has a strong message to Geta across to the audience which I believe is really successful.
